New Greens for the Harook!!

We’re happy to share a preview of the latest 15mm release from Mad Robot Miniatures! This is the next wave of releases for the Harook, the enigmatic avian aliens we have all come to love.

They will be sold as pairs, 2 plasma Gunners, 2 SAW Gunners with shoulder mounted launchers, and 2 Snipers with Targeting Drone.

These detailed sculpts were done by the un-official father of the Harook...Pedro Navaro

We anticipate these to be released in late April. Thanks to all who have supported Mad Robot! Look for some more new release announcements in the next month.

28mm Greatcoats Progress

Received the first of what should be the final 3D prints on the Greatcoats today! There are adjustments to be made on the weapons to make them a little beefier but the final masters should be in hand in another week or 2 and then it's off to the casters!

TMC Auslanders

So, last time I shared a little preview of a new project that has been bubbling in the old noggin. It takes a note from the comic Alien Legion but goes in a little bit darker direction. The word Auslander is Germanic in origin and roughly translates into "out lander" or "alien".

The Tachyon Mercenary Corps sees the diverse mix of alien races in the galaxy as a fertile breeding ground for specialist troops. Ever determined to gain any tactical edge possible, the TMC employ Auslander units as exotic use troops, capable of being deployed in almost any situation. The bonus for the TMC is that Auslanders are equally at home on the front line of a standard conflict.

Rumor has it that some commanders believe the Auslander unit should be the building block for a stand alone force. To this day it is still speculation, but it may speak to why the TMC only deploys limited numbers of these units in any given theatre.

This new range idea will provide me some fun in developing new alien races, something I am very keen to do. These will be released in 15mm, release date is TBD. It will be a while until I get these where I want them.

I'm posting these here so I can get feedback from people. If you have ideas or suggestions about any of these concepts I post, please email them to me or leave a comment here on this blog. The following are 2 concepts I have so far...they are still WIP.

Mad Robot Announces Customer Gallery

Hey folks! I'm putting together a gallery to show off all the awesome paint jobs that people are applying to Mad Robot figures. If you have some you'd like to share please send them to projects@madrobotminiatures.com.

A few guidelines:

PLEASE...pictures of Mad Robot figures...nothing else
Include your first and last name or an appropriate "handle"
Send no more than 6 pictures, make them clear as possible
Keep the file size to under 500K for now

As soon as I start receiving some pictures, I'll get the gallery posted for the world to see.

IMPORTANT: If no name is included, I will not post them.

February Update

28mm News

Just a quick note to update the progress of our 28mm Greatcoats. The final test print is off to the printers and I hope to have it in hand by the end of this week. I'll post pictures as soon as I have them. Assuming that everything looks good, we'll print up the remaining pieces and they'll be off to the casters no later than the 22nd of February. It's speculation from there but I would hope to have our first batch of figures ready to sell by mid-March. We'll be keeping our fingers crossed that everything goes well.

15mm News

As work continues on the 2nd wave of Harook minis, designs for a dropship are now in the works as well.
The design phase has begun for some heavier additions to the TMC, more on that to come.
I've been considering a new alien race to add some more spice to the 15mm Sci-Fi world.

Harook Second Wave - Update

Just a quick update to say that the next wave of Harook are being worked on right now. Mr. Bug Man himself, Pedro Navaro, has just finished relocating to the U.K. so we are hoping for some greens by the end of February. If that happens look for a late March release.

The Harook Are Loose!!!

We're happy to announce the official release of our second 15mm line...The Harook!

Very little is understood about the Harook; they are unpredictable and have an unknown agenda. Although they have an affinity to other avian species of alien life, it would appear that they have disdain for all others, especially humanity. Their speech patterns, consisting of a complex series of squawks and screeches, do not seem to live up to the advanced technology they bear on the battlefield. This leads some to believe that an advanced, as of yet unknown, intelligence directs them.

These avian aliens come with 10 unique poses to a pack and stand slightly taller than the average human.

The models were sculpted by Pedro Navaro and painted by Spacejacker.

3D Prints: The Good and the Bad

I've found what I believe to be the best 3D printing service out there for small scale models. The company is called Lightbeam3D and their work is undeniably the most detailed and finished I have ever seen.

Here's the latest test print of Major Hammerfaust:

You can't see all the details but no worries, it's the wrong height so I have to re-print it. This is a very detail oriented process but I promise all of you, it will be worth the time it's taking to get it right.

The other cool thing I discovered is...

Tachyon Mercenary Corps

Based on the planet Tachyon-12 in the Selous system, the TMC wages war for the highest bidder.  By investing their huge war-time profits into the latest technology, they storm the battlefield with a precision that has earned them their reputation as one of the galaxy's elite fighting units.  TMC  Recruiting Officers are free to choose their units from the thousands of worlds surrounding the Selous system, giving them the ultimate in flexibility, based upon their combat mission.   

Jump Troops are used by aggressive TMC commanders as a fast-attack element.  Their ability to move quickly and hit hard makes them a feared weapon in the TMC arsenal.  The scream of their jump jets is the last thing their adversaries hear as they descend from the skies, delivering white-hot death.

These figures are currently in production and we will have another announcement about the release date and pricing in the next few weeks.

30mm Greatcoats Special Character

The idea behind these special characters is simple, release something with some personality. I also hope these will serve as a way for us to reach out to the painters in the world and give them something cool to work with.

The Major will be cast in resin.

Just received pics for the first Harook sculpt. I worked very closely with Pedro to make sure we got the best result and he has delivered a great figure. Now that the first pose is completed, Mr. Navaro can move forward at a faster pace on the rest. I won't go so far as to put a date on it yet but I am hoping it will be soon.

Quick shout out to Dropship Horizon for the honor of appearing on their blog. I am discovering the passion of the 15mm community and it really gets the creative juices flowing. There are lots of good discussion to be had over on the TMP Sci Fi 15mm board.

I just finished with the newsletter signup page. It's up on the link bar, in case you didn't already see it. Between that, facebook, and the blog, you should now have access to our updates, 24/7.

Things are moving along quite nicely. 30mm Greatcoats news is coming any day now and the 15mm Harook are picking up steam as the sculpting continues. If you have an idea on how to make these lines better or any ideas about what should come next, send us an email and voice your opinion. Opinions are important and they can certainly sway the direction of a line one way or the other so tell us what you think.

New 15mm Line of Sci Fi Minis

Mad Robot Miniatures is happy to announce it's first line of 15mm miniatures...The Harook. Designed around a bird-like alien race, our first offering in this line will be a 10 figure squad that includes 10 unique poses, including a leader. We have plans to follow up rather quickly with command, heavy weapons, some assault variations, and a dropship.

The master sculpts are being done by "Mr. Bug Man" himself...Pedro Navaro. We look forward to this exciting foray into 15mm and we are grateful to all who shared their opinions with us while we came to a decision about what direction to take.

GC Update, 15mm Stuff & Forum Changes

So I removed the stuff from the forum that just isn't necessary at this point. From now on we will be focusing on the minis and just the minis. Also, all of our concept areas are now available to be viewed by guests. You still have to register to post comments, which I strongly encourage you to do :)

I heard from Chris at Ravenstar Studios and detailing has begun on our 30mm greatcoats. I am still confident that I'll have some pre-order info in a few weeks. Stay tuned...

I also decided this week to start concepts for a few 15mm releases. Check out more about that in the new 15mm section of the forum. I'll be looking into a sculptor and possibly doing these in metal, which means finding a casting service to handle that.

Hopefully by now people who check this blog out know how much I value feedback from end users. I got some great responses from people over the weekend and Mad Robot will be starting work on a new alien race line for 15mm. If the demand is there, maybe for 28mm as well. I won't reveal much more at this point, other than to say "keep your beak to the grindstone..."

Greatcoats Progress Report 7/16

The sculpts for our first offering are coming along nicely, we look to have them completed by the end of July. I'll be getting pre-order information posted in the next few weeks. I can also give some specific details about what is immediately coming after the Greatcoats figures:

     Packs & Accessories
     Alternate Heads (no gas masks)
     Assault Weapons (grenade launcher, flame thrower, plasma rifle, melty rifle)

These should come together quickly as they are smaller in scope than the main sculpts.

After that, we'll start addressing a Heavy Weapons Section for the Greatcoats.

By the way, does anyone have an idea for a home world or unit designation for these guys? I'm a little tired of "Greatcoats". Suggestions are welcomed. If you want to get further involved in the look of our future products, head over to the forum, register, and get involved. I'd love to hear what you have to say.

Greatcoats Poll: Pieces

I've received lots of feedback about how people like their mini "cut up". They seem to fall into 3 groups:

Group A: They want a single figure...no parts, except for a separate weapon. Good options for dynamic poses but you take what you get when you buy them, no possibility to adjust these at all. They are quick to go from the box to the table however.
Group B: They like a whole body/frame but want the arms and heads separate. That gives them some flexibility in the final look of their mini.
Group C: Prefer separate torsos, legs, arms, heads. They don't have a lot of variety in the poses, but they like the ability to piece together their minis as they see fit.

Da Masta Cheef has asked for a better Sgt. pose...how are these? What about hats?

Also, here's a snap of the six poses I have so far. These will be combined, with a few doubles and a Sgt., to comprise a squad of 10. Anything stand out as better or worse? Keep a few things in mind...I put pistols in the hands so you can see the pose better, also I haven't finalized all the "coat work" until I know I have some poses I will definitely keep.

New view of Greatcoat Trooper WIP

Here's a render of a Greatcoat Trooper. Eventually these renders should lead to something real. That's the plan anyway. It really takes time to get quotes and info from people so while I wait...I'll create.

I've been working on the bottom part tonight. Tomorrow I'll fine tune the sleeves & upper body. Got some armor bits to add, as well. Stay tuned for more pics.

New Direction?

I'm investigating the possibility of doing some things in hard plastic, instead of resin or metal. The cost is WAY more up front but much cheaper per sprue. It also allows for the maximum in detail when building from a 3D model.

Tell me what you guys think. Would you be up to doing pre-orders? Or maybe some "commitments" to purchase, the way I've seen Wargames Factory to things? What do you think?

Greatcoats Update

Well, reality sometimes deals us a hand we don't expect but that doesn't mean you fold right away. After doing some serious reviews of the 3D prints, I have have determined that they are not suitable for casting. So that means I start over again and approach this from another angle. Currently, I am exploring some new production options and that is going to take some time. Hopefully the few of you who have been following us will continue to monitor our progress. In the meantime I will continue to post some shots of works in progress to keep you in the loop. As usual, if you have ideas or suggestions, feel free to give them.

Greatcoats Update 5/13

So I figured I would share what I can as I prep the 3D prints for molding & casting.

Below is a pic of how one of my sprues comes back from 3D printing:

It's an off white material that is hard to see any detail on. I applied a light coat of primer and this is the result:

Here's close up showing the build lines. Those lines are the actual layers of material, each as thin as 16 microns:

I'm waiting for my tiny tools to arrive in the mail and then I'll try sanding them. I might wait and make a cast in resin and sand that, as resin is easier to work with than the hard 3D print material.

Greatcoats Update

The master prints have arrived from the printer and they are being prepped for molding. This is nervous for me as I am anxious to see how the 3D print works into the molding process. The 3D print doesn't photograph well but I'll take some snaps once we get through molding.

One Step Closer...

Our Greatcoats master sculpts have been sent off to the printers and we should have them in hand by the end of the week. I'll post some pics ASAP. Molds will be hopefully done a week later and then we can start running some casts. The usual caveats apply regarding time frames but we will be moving forward as fast as we can.

Greatcoats Pose Previews

So here we have a preview of some poses being worked on. There are 3 "advancing" poses and 3 "firing" poses. The plan at this point will be to offer 5 of each in a final set(tip of the hat to Blackhand). There are still of some refinements to be done but feel free to give feedback. The blurry parts are just low-renders to show the position of the pieces. PLEASE, leave feedback and comments...they do matter.

Today I would like to introduce you to our concept artist, Pierre-Marc Mazerolle. Professionally known as PMaz, Pierre-Marc is an art teacher, graphic designer, and freelance artist. He excels at taking my mad visions and turning them into a clear, well-laid out design.

Current State Of Affairs

With concept art finished on the initial greatcoats complete, it seems we may have found our digital sculptor. Work on the 3D model should begin shortly and from there it will be prototyped via 3D printing. After that we'll begin the molding/casting process and we should finally have some something cool to look at.

We encourage people to spread the word and tell your fellow hobbyists about Mad Robot. The more input we get from you guys, the better our products will hopefully be.

My name is Steve Stodden, a.k.a. the "Mad Scientist", and I've been an avid gamer and hobbyist for about 7 years. My favorite hobby & pastime is to turn on the Chicago White Sox(no haters, please) while I perform all kinds of complex surgeries on my "28mm Sci-Fi" army. In the midst of my converting obsession, I came to realize that many "28mm Sci-Fi" hobbyists find themselves looking for certain arms, torsos, or heads that just aren't available. That's were the idea for Mad Robot Miniatures has its origin.

My goal is to produce small upgrades and complete figures that will give gamers/hobbyists some options that they never had before. As this venture grows, so will it's scope. I want to offer up alternatives for players of all miniatures games. The biggest thing a gamer or hobbyist can do to help in this process is make some suggestions. What do you think would be a cool idea? What line of figures would you like to see that isn't available? I can't guarantee that every idea will be turned into a finalized product. But every idea will be considered, at the very least

I'll even go one farther and make this promise to you. If you make a suggestion for something new that we decide is worth pursuing, I'll give you a bunch of the final minis...FREE. I'll fill in the details & restrictions once the ideas start to come in. Again...no promises, but this is your chance to make your opinion count.

Here we have the final draft of the greatcoats artwork. I'll make a point to say that the accessories (knife, canteen, etc) are in the sketch to show context. They will not be included as part of a sculpt. A weapons/accessories sprue will be produced separately.

There are obvious advantages to having the torsos separate from the legs when assembling your minis. However a one piece body allows for some very dynamic sculpts/poses.
